I've spent a lot of time in the last week thinking about 2016. It was a year that filled me with gratiude for the experiences that I had and the people that we met. It was an incredible journy of learning and loving, risking and stretching, settling in and branching out. It was a year for big leaps (in fact, my word for 2016 was leap.) Big leaps are important, and meaningful, and eathershatteringly necessary to move forward. But after a big leap, figuring out what to do when you land is just as important. We don't always move forward in giant leaps; little steps are equally important, and take just as much planning, and courage and intention.
Plotting the small steps after a year of big leaps can seem oddly overwhelming. Of course change and growth come from the big leaps...making sure the small steps are just as meaningful is what I want from 2017. In my tradition of choosing a word to be my beacon for the New Year, I've decided on an important one: sisu.
Sisu is a Finnish ideal with no direct translation in English. It's really more than just a word...it's a feeling. It's grit and determination, resilience, courage, perserverance and a bit of stubborness thrown in. It's how you get things done with your whole being.
So, 2017, each small step that I take into this year will be filled with sisu. There is work to be done, professionally, personally, and in an ever changing world where voices of love need to come together to outshine the voices with a darker message.
Sisu. Even the small steps take courage, and even the small steps are important ones.
